To get away from it all and travel back in time, stay at the historic Wawona Hotel, formerly known as Big Trees Lodge. It was renamed Big Trees Lodge March 1, 2016, because of a lawsuit, but it regained its longtime name in 2019. Its located about 30 miles from the busy Yosemite Valley. Away from the crowds, this lodge is closest to the park's South Entrance, which you can access via Hwy. 41. The closest towns are Oakhurst and Fish Camp.

This hotel of six white buildings is a stunning place to stay. Ornate woodwork is one aspect of the charming Victorian-style cottages and lodge, a National Historic Landmark, just minutes from the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias. Decorated with authentic period decor, the rooms do not have TVs. You can book a room with a private bath, one of 50, or opt for a room without a bath. Communal baths are located not far from rooms.

On the lodge’s verandas, relax and take in the views or meet new people as you sit on one of the property’s classic Adirondack chairs. You can also take in a musical performance, so check with the front desk for details.

The Wawona Hotel is much more than a gorgeous lodge, though. It offers a multitude of activities and amenities. Get active and head to the outdoor swimming pool, horse stable or on-site golf course, the only golf course inside a national park.
