Yosemite: Small enough to get around, but full of big, amazing views
Megan McConachie, Columbia MO

I visited Yosemite National Park with my mom, my aunt and my grandma in the summer of 2007. It was the first time there for all but my aunt, and we were lucky enough to have a family friend with a house inside the park. It was the perfect home base for us to explore Yosemite. For me, Yosemite National Park is just small enough to get around easily, but it boasts amazing views that would normally seem to belong in a much larger place.

Traveling down toward Yosemite Valley the first day, I got my first glimpse of Tunnel View. It was definitely love at first sight. I was treated with my first look at Half Dome and Bridalveil Fall. For the rest of our trip, each day started and ended with a stop at Tunnel View to take photos. The view is different and breathtaking at every hour of every day.

Of course, all of our days were packed with even more stunning stops. From the steep face of El Capitan to the rushing waters of the Merced River, I was so impressed with everything that Yosemite had to offer. Glacier Point is the perfect stop to really soak up the majesty that is Yosemite. Trees, falls, mountains and meadows are all visible, and we didn’t want to leave the top! However, the baby and mama bears we spotted on the way down made our departure worth it.

At the end of the trip, I was sad to see Yosemite disappear in our rearview mirror. It’s one of the few places I have visited that I vow to return to, and I can’t wait to make plans for my next Yosemite adventure!
